Bugaboo Bee Brakes Recalled:Claim Your Brackets

Bugaboo-Bee-BrakesAlthough over 120 people have notified Bugaboo Bee of brake failure in the United States, no injuries have been reported. Bugaboo Bee are solving the issue by making brake brackets available  in a product ‘recall to repair’.

To receive the bracket set at home free of charge complete the bugaboo brake bracket form.  To claim your breaks you will need your bugaboo bee; date of purchase, serial number and name of retailer.

When you receive your brackets you will receive instructions on how to assemble or install the brackets on to your brakes. You can also see an image on how the brackets fit on the bugaboo bee brakes.

We have a Bugaboo Bee which we love because it is so compact and seems to glide through busy streets and shops.  The Bugaboo Bee is very light, so on a steep incline or at traffic lights I always use the safety strap.

To find your serial number look under the seat rest and above the foot brake. The serial number is on the top panel of the basket.

You can also visit your place of purchase to receive the brackets.  The official Bugaboo notice on the bugaboo bee breaks reads as follows:

Important notice for Bugaboo Bee owners

Bugaboo has recently learned that is has had some cases that the Bugaboo Bee brake has not worked properly after a period of time in use. For this reason, we have taken precautionary measures and developed a set of brackets that can be easily clicked onto the rear wheels of the pushchair in order to secure the brake function.

The brackets are now integrated into the Bugaboo Bee during production. Bugaboo would like to provide these brackets to all Bugaboo Bee owners.   Bugaboo

I just received an email from Mothercare's Customer Care manager on the Bugaboo Bee.
    "Dear Customer,

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE – PLEASE READ

Our records show that you bought a Bugaboo Bee from Mothercare prior to April 2009.

We are aware of an issue with the brakes on Bugaboo Bees sold up until April this year and we are urgently contacting all our customers who have buggies that are affected. Customers who bought this model of buggy after April this year can be reassured that there is no issue with their buggy as the brakes have since been modified.

Bugaboo made us aware of an issue earlier this year where build-up of dirt and grit in the brakes potentially can lead to them failing. Bugaboo has developed an easy-fit brake bracket for customers to modify their Bees, which will address this issue.

If you are not sure if this bracket is fitted to your Bugaboo Bee, please refer to the attachment. The attachment illustrates what the brackets look like when fitted.

As you are on our records as having bought a Bugaboo Bee before April 2009, we will automatically be sending you a set of these brackets by special delivery and they should arrive with you by December 19th.

In the meantime, we would point out to customers that the brake is a fundamental functional element of the pushchair and customers who choose to continue to use their Bugaboo Bee without the additional brake brackets should do so with extreme caution.

The brackets will come with fitting instructions that should allow you to fit them easily, a guide is also available on the Bugaboo website (www.bugaboo.com).

At Mothercare we place safety and quality as our top priorities. All our products adhere to the appropriate European and British Safety Standards. We recognise that in this instance we should have contacted you sooner and we apologise for this breakdown in internal communications."
  • Thanks Sally - you are quick off the mark. We got our email from Mothercare too. If you didn't buy your Bugaboo Bee from Mothercare you can still claim a free bracket here - http://legacy.bugaboo.com/extra/service/bee_brake/

Thank you so much for the info on Bugaboo. I wonder if you are investigating any toys for children which have been recalled. I found out only a year after the recall that a toy (polly pocket) was recalled and that was through a friend.
  • Hi Anne, Yes I check recalls for all baby and children's products (including Toys) on a daily basis. You can find the latest UK product recalls on my product recall page.

You are right about the polly pocket toys being recalled due to lead. In 2007, US based, Mattel recalled 18 million products in 2007 globally. There were 44 different Polly Pocket toys recalled. The issues with the product recall were the amounts of lead in the paint and also magnets that came loose easily.

Here are the Mattel products recalled in the UK in case anyone missed the original recall.

Thanks for instructions on how to install the brakes. We fitted the brackets today. It took 5 minutes to install them.

After a two mile walk through busy city centre streets with the new safety brackets on the bugaboo bee I can see a definite improvement in the stability and strength of the brakes.

The Bugaboo Bee feels more solid and sturdy. I feel more confident pushing it in high winds and it has stopped veering left or right depending on the camber of the road.
  • Hi Happy Mum, glad you will be able to get your brakes improved and thanks so much for the comments.
  • Anne, I hope your brackets have arrived now. My bugaboo brackets arrived this week - 2 weeks after I submitted the Bugaboo BeeBrake Form Let me know if you don't get them within the next two weeks.
  • Thanks for the tip! We have a bee and the brakes are terrible. I never really consider complaining about it, and I don't know why! Found you on the BMB twitter page :) Great blog!

I've sent off form to get brakes, but nothing has come back from Bugaboo yet. Really disappointed as I love the bugaboo, good price in comparison with other buggies - but still £380 is a lot of money for a faulty potentially dangerous product!
