Local Homeopathic Remedy
It’s worth checking if homeopathic remedies are available on prescription in your area. Many pharmacists such as Boots will also stock pre-made homeopathic remedies that you can buy over the counter. Your local homeopathic pharmacist or practitioner is a healthcare professional who will have a postgraduate training in homeopathy and be regulated by their relevant professional body.
You can find a local practitioner on the British Homeopathic Association website search facility. You can also register with a GP who is a qualified homeopathic practitioner or be referred to one of the four homeopathic hospitals in the UK.
- Cost: Approximately £4.20 for vial (small bottle) of 7g granules
- Strength: Chammomilla 30c (stronger than commercial brands)
- Ingredients: Typically Chammomilla and sucrose (check with your homeopath or pharmacist at purchase.)
- Ease of Administration: Typically dispensed in a small vial of 7 grams. Tip approximately 10 – 20 granules into the cap and then into baby’s mouth. No fiddling with tricky sachets. Easier to give to baby when out and about.
- Available: Available 0n prescription from your GP. You local homeopathic pharmacist and also at your local pharmacist such as Boots, who also supply local homeopath remedies. Consulting a homeopath directly allows you to ask questions and procure the correct dosage for your baby’s individual needs.
Nelson’s Teetha
Nelsons is the UK’s largest manufacturer of natural healthcare products. They are a family business and have been providing natural medicines to the general public since 1860. You may be aware of their Rescue™ Remedy and Bach™ Original Flower Remedies.
- Cost: £4.80 for 24 sachets
- Strength: Contains a 6c homeopathic potency of natural Chamomilla.
- Ingredients: Chamomilla and lactose. Also contains xylitol and starch.
- Ease of Administration: Sachets allow you to pour the powder into baby’s mouth, but it is difficult to assess half dosage recommended for babies under six months of age.
- Available: Holland and Barrett, Boots, Lloyds pharmacies and independent healthfood and pharmacy stores
Ashton & Parsons Infants’ Powders
Ashton & Parsons teething powders are owned by the international consumer product company SSL International. SSL are a large global corporation with well know brand names such as Durex and Scholl. Ashton & Parson’s sits within their UK Over the Counter (OTC) brand portfolio which also includes children’s Medised paracetamol based analgesic and Woodward’s gripe water.
- Cost: £2.53 for 20 wrappers (13p per wrapper)
- Strength: Tincture of matricaria 0.002 ml
- Ingredients: Tincture of matricaria 0.002 ml (an alcoholic decoction of Matricaria Chamomilla, a carminative related to chamomile) and lactose.
- Ease of Administration: The thin paper wrappers can be a bit ‘tricky’. Its easier to put onto a spoon first.
- Available: Most pharmacies and some selected grocery / supermarkets.
Weleda
- Cost: £6.50 for bottle of 15g granules
- Strength: 3X homeopathic potency of Matricaria chamomilla radix, 1ml (equivalent to 0.001g Chamomilla root in 100g)
- Ingredients: The base granule is made from sucrose and won’t cause problems for lactose-intolerant infants. Suitable for vegans.
- Ease of Administration: Granules can be crushed and dissolved in boiled and cooled water for very small children.
- Available: Online and health stores.
Notes on Using Homeopathic Remedies:
- Always read the instructions on the packet and check the use by date.
- Keep out of reach of children.
- If symptoms persist longer than 5 days seek advice from your GP or homeopathic practitioner.
- If your baby overdoses it will cause diarrhoea due to excessive lactose intake. Treatment would be withdrawal of the product and supportive measures such as oral rehydration therapy.
