Greener cars for mums
Mindful Mum knows that mums on the run need a car big enough to fit all the little ones in but green enough to protect the environment.

As awareness of carbon footprints grow, so does the demand of greener cars from consumers. Manufacturers are now answering to eco conscious consumers and changing the way they make their cars.
Here is a list of some of the greenest cars of 2011 for mums.
- Toyota Prius
- Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDi Greenline II
- Nissan Leaf
- Volkswagen Passat Bluemotion
- Ford Focus Estate 1.6 TDCi 115 Titanium
Toyota has become a market leader in hybrid and eco cars. It was voted the greenest car brand in the world by a new survey from world consultancy brand Interbrand. The Prius is a fully hybrid car great for mums on the school run. The hybrid technology allows the car to run on electric charge for 1.2m up to speeds of 31mph fully on electric power. This means the school run or nipping to the shops can be done with zero emissions, zero petrol and zero engine noise.
Skoda’s Greenline technology includes a Stop/start system, gear change recommendation, and energy recuperation, improving economy and lowering CO2 emissions. The Octavia 1.6 TDi Greenline II recently won best small family car at the Next Green Car Awards 2011 This ‘improved’ fuel consumption on Skoda’s petrol and diesel cars is helping reduce the damage done by cars.
Named as 2011’s World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show, the Nissan Leaf is 100% electric. Boasting 90 mph on zero emissions, the Nissan Leaf is not only eco friendly but cost effective as no fuel costs apply. A stylish car with plenty of room for 5 passengers.
Volkswagen’s BlueMotion range of cars are low emission versions of their regular petrol and diesel cars. With efficiency top of its list, Volkswagen have included many fuel saving techinques such as stop/start to cut emissions when stationary, and revised aerodynamics to reduce drag. The turbodiesel engine, combined with the fuel saving techniques make the BlueMotion Passat eco friendly. Recently, the VW Passat BlueMotion entered the Guinness World Records book for the longest distance travelled by a car on a single tank of fuel – 1,527m!
The new Ford Focus offers low CO2 emissions and excellent fuel efficiency. The ecoboost directly and efficiently injects fuel into each cylinder so you can enjoy a bigger engine whilst being green. This car is also packed with features and technology, such as Low Speed Safety System – when your car is in slow moving traffic, if the car in front stops unexpectedly, sensors will recognise this and automatically brake for you. The Focus Estate won Best Family Estate car at the Next Green Car Awards 2011.
