Following the news of the US cot recall parents are seeking cot safety guidelines. Mindful Mum asked guest author, Sarah Jane Matthews, owner of British nursery furniture company Bambizi, for her top ten tips for selecting a safe cot for your baby. Although you might reasonably expect all cots to be safe, they are responsible for almost 20 percent of injuries to children in their first year of life. It is not currently a legal requirement for manufacturers to test their nursery furniture to any safety standard — which makes it difficult to know how safe your cot really is. Drop side cots are very popular because they are convenient for picking and putting down baby. However, since 2007, there have been 20 different cot recalls in the US from many different manufacturers. Nearly all of the recalls were issued because a durability or hardware problem created a gap in the cot where a child could become entrapped or suffocate. In April 2009, Toys R Us Chief Executive, Jerry Storch, announced that they would no longer order drop ship cots in the US because of the safety issues. The recall does not apply to the UK because the cots are not sold directly by British retailers. However, if you have a drop side cot then there are some precautions you can take to ensure the safety of your cot.
