Chef Sanjeev Kapoor - Aloo matar paneer - Vegetarian curry to bring on labour

Matar paneer is a simple yet tasty vegetarian dish from the northern part of India around New Delhi and the Punjab, made with peas, potatoes and paneer (Indian cottage cheese). Pair it with rice or a piece of naan or chapati to make a full meal.

Aloo Matar Paneer


  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled
  • 1 cup shelled green peas
  • 100 gms cottage cheese (paneer)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 8-10 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsps oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1½ tsps coriander powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 cup fresh tomato puree
  • 2 tbsps roasted peanut paste
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder


  1. Grind onion, garlic and ginger.
  2. Heat oil in a nine stick pan, add cumin seeds and sauté till lightly browned.
  3. Cut thin batons of potatoes.
  4. Add potatoes, salt and turmeric powder and mix. Add ¼ cup water and mix well. Cover and cook till potatoes are almost done.
  5. Cut paneer into small cubes. Add coriander powder and red chilli powder and mix. Add green peas and mix. Cover and cook till the vegetables are done.
  6. Add tomato puree and mix. Cover and cook for 2 minutes.
  7. Add peanut paste and mix well. And paneer and mix.
  8. Sprinkle garam masala powder and serve hot with roti.
