Buy Sophie The Giraffe
Giraffe Teether Toy for Babies from 0 – 12 months
From £9.49 for newborns upwards

After seeing so many of friend’s babies happily chewing on the  Sophie’s legs, neck and ears I introduced my six month old son to the delights of the sweet smelling giraffe.  Sophie is a great teether. He likes to gnaw on her ears and antlers.  She can be squeezed and chewed as she is made from 100% natural rubber (phthalate free) and food paint.

Manufacturer Information:

Specialists in items for babies, Vulli was founded in 1946 in France and over the years has become well-known all over the world in the field of nursery items and toys for babies. Sophie the Giraffe teether is perfect for soothing baby’s sore gums when teething. The scent of Natural Rubber from the HEVEA TREE makes Sophie very special and easy for your child to identify amid all other toys.

Sophie the Giraffe is slender, flexible, and soft, baby can squeeze and chew her in complete safety. Made of 100% Natural Rubber (phthalates Free) and food paint. Lovable and amusing, she makes a happy sound when her body is squeezed: Stimulate baby’s hearing and helps him to understand the link between cause and effect. To clean, simply wipe with a warm damp cloth. Do not immerse the teether in water.

Height: 7 inches or 18 cm. Made in France (French Alps) Sophie is BPA, Phthalates Free.

My wee one likes Sophie too – in fact I’m paranoid I might lose her and do double checks every time we go out.
The teether has been a saviour during the worst teething bouts! :o

Readers have asked if ‘Toys R Us’ in Canada recalled ‘Sophie the Giraffe’. I can see no official retailer, manufacturer or government recall evidence of this. However, there are concerned comments on blog posts regarding cases of children choking, 3 safety related complaints made to Health Canada and forum postings stated that some stores did take her off the shelves pending review.

Mindful Mum has researched the product recall archive for Toys R Us as far as June 2007 and there are no product recalls for Sophie or her manufacturer Vulli. We have checked the archives on Canada’s Consumer Product Safety product recall site from 1995 and there is no mention of Sophie or Vulli.

Canada’s Toy’s R Us continues to sell Sophie the Giraffe as a teether and toy in its stores and on its website.

I absolutely love the Sophie Giraffe. I had one when I was a baby, so did my brother and sister and pretty much every French child I knew, they’ve stood the test of time. They are cute and indestructible!

I have read that sophie was recalled. Is this toy safe for babies? I have a brand new grandson, and things have really changed over the years. Everyone raves about Sophie, but I have read it has been recalled. Anyone out there-educate me

Grandma Mar, Congratulations on your brand new grandson.
The initial rumours of a recall came from Canadian blogs which mentioned that Babies R Us took them off the shelf. I have researched the US and Canada Consumer Protection archives online and can find no evidence of an ‘official’ retail, manufacturer or government recall. I have found no evidence of a recall in the UK or Europe. For peace of mind you can see over 100 reviews of Sophie on the Canadian Babies R Us website here – http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=2854311

Some mother’s have written on blogs that their babies have choked on Sophie’s legs.
I think with every toy you have to exercise a degree of caution. I don’t allow my son (9 months) to play with Sophie alone in his cot, but that goes for all his toys apart from teddy. He has been happily chewing on her legs and antlers since he was 6 months old.

Sophie is made of natural rubber and food quality paints, which make her a very good teething toy.
