Is it safe to use a jacuzzi/sauna when pregnant?

Rest and relaxation is key to a healthy pregnancy. However, is it safe to melt into a jacuzzi or sweat it out in the sauna when pregnant?

Sauna

Sorry to break it to you ladies, but it’s not advisable to relax in hot leisure facilities whilst pregnant.
This list of forbidden pleasures include:

  • Jacuzzi
  • Sauna
  • Hot tub
  • Steam room
  • Steam bath
  • Hot baths

When using one of the above, your body can’t sweat effectively to lower your temperature. This causes a rise in your body’s core temperature. When your body’s core temp increases, your unborn baby can become at risk, particularly in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Studies on animals have found a rise in temperature can increase the chances of the offspring developing brain and spine defects, (Neural Tube Defects (NDT)) including spina bifida.

Excessive heat can also lead to a drop in blood pressure. This can leave you light heated and feeling faint.

Try these safer methods of relaxation to calm your nerves and combat your mood swings during pregnancy.

  • A swim
  • A foot massage
  • A hand massage
  • An organic facial
