Diabetes UK raise awareness of condition in children

To mark World Diabetes Day, Diabetes UK has launched a campaign to help raise awareness of the signs of diabetes in young children.

The Four T’s stand for Toilet, Thirsty, Tired and Thinner, which are the four major symptoms of type one diabetes.  Five hundred children a year become seriously ill with the complication ‘diabetic ketoacidosis’ which is potentially fatal, because the early signs of diabetes have been missed.

Children and Young People

2012 World Diabetes Day has focused on children and young people for their campaign, and Diabetes UK are campaigning for doctors to carry out the correct tests for type one diabetes if a child presents with any of the symptoms:

  • Tiredness
  • Frequent urination
  • Constant thirst
  • Irritability
  • Losing weight

How to get involved

Diabetes UK are encouraging parents, friends and families to get involved in their campaign by sending a letter to your GP, feeding back to them about what goes on in your area, or even getting in touch with your local paper if you’ve got more time to give!  Find out more at Diabetes UK.
