NTA Awards 2020
It was a night to remember! When the titans of television gathered at the O2 Arena to celebrate everything great about the small screen over the last twelve months. There were glitz and glamour in every direction throughout the evening and Tele’s biggest stars were all present and walked the red carpet. This year, the awards celebrated their 20th anniversary.
The awards are voted for by the public. They had the chance to vote for their favourite soap operas, dramas, an entertainment show, hosts and comedies. This year there was a new host – David Walliams. He had taken over from Dermot O’Leary, who had hosted the award ceremony for 19 years.
Over the course of the evening, Walliams cracked jokes about the star-studded audience and suggested that Ant and Dec needed booster seats – he was quite the joker while hosting the show. As the evening went on, he grew into his new role! The pair also collected the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award for presenting I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! These two seem to be unstoppable!
So, who won what? Well, there were winners everywhere during the evening. Ant and Dec walked away from their 19th consecutive award for the best TV presenter. Funny thing is, they actually hadn’t presented their own show Saturday Night Takeaway since 2019.
Mrs Browns Boys won its fifth award at the National Television Awards. The show picked up the award for best comedy. It beat off stiff competition from a number of quality comedy shows. The much talked about Fleabag and Ricky Gervais’ Afterlife had been tipped for big things but left empty-handed.
The Best Drama award to Peaky Blinders. The story of the Shelby family has become a huge favourite with audiences up and down the UK. And the awards for Peaky Blinders didn’t end there, Cillian Murphy picked up best Drama Performance for his portrayal of Thomas Shelby.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house for Jesy Nelson, The Little Mix singer couldn’t hold back her tears when she won the award for Best Factual with Odd One Out. This documentary shown on BBC 3, tells the story on the wave of online abuse that Nelson had to endure after she appeared on The X Factor back in 2011.
A comedy institution was honoured as well. Sir Michael Palin picked up a special recognition award for his outstanding career. During his speech, he paid tribute to his recently departed friend and Monty Python member Terry Jones. Jones had passed away the week before.
Speaking of classic British comedy, Gavin and Stacey were honoured with the Impact Award. Going down as one of the most-watched television shows over the last decade, it’s fitting that the series was singled out for recognition. The icing on the cake was the appearance of Ruth Jones, aka Nessa flirting with Tom Jones.
We all know that Nessa had a history with Sir Tom and this was mentioned in the storyline of the original show. This was brought to the fore once more as Jones accepted the award in character with hilarious consequences – Perhaps they could both heads of to Las Vegas if Sir Tom takes up one of his famous residencies there. While on the subject of Vegas – when in between your favourite television programmes, check out Magical Vegas slots. Here you’ll find a collection of games based top TV shows and loads of other themes.
