Baby Tummy Time
This leaflet explains what baby tummy time is.

Tummy time is important for babies. When placed on their tummy, a baby must learn to lift his or her head up on their own. This gradually developing the muscles of the neck and upper trunk, which will support upright posture, balance and even the control of eye movements needed for reading and writing later on.
What is Flat head syndrome?
It is normal for babies’ heads to become slightly flatter on one side. If they spend all their time on their backs this can become noticeable (plagiocephaly). Flat head (plagiocephaly) is a cosmetic condition and will not affect your baby’s brain.
This leaflet explains what baby tummy time is. Produced by NHS Scotland it is given to every new mother before they leave the maternity ward.
